Alkene (Olefin) Metathesis:

Ring-opening and ring-closing alkene metathesis are chemical reactions that involve the rearrangement of C-C double bonds in cyclic compounds. These reactions are essential tools in organic synthesis and have numerous applications in preparing complex molecules.

Ring Opening Olefin Metathesis:

Definition: Ring opening olefin metathesis, often abbreviated as ROM, is a chemical reaction in which a cyclic compound with one or more carbon-carbon double bonds undergoes cleavage of the ring, resulting in the formation of an open-chain compound.

Ring Closing Olefin Metathesis:

Definition: Ring-closing olefin metathesis, often abbreviated as RCM, is a chemical reaction in which an open-chain compound with two terminal carbon-carbon double bonds is converted into a cyclic compound by the formation of a new carbon-carbon double bond within the molecule.

Olefin Metathesis Mechanism:

ROM Mechanism:

ROM typically involves the use of a metathesis catalyst, such as a transition metal carbene complex, which facilitates the breaking of the carbon-carbon double bonds within the ring and the formation of new double bonds in the resulting open-chain compounds.

RCM Mechanism:

RCM also relies on metathesis catalysts to promote the formation of the new carbon-carbon double bond, leading to the closure of the ring. The reaction is highly efficient and can form rings of various sizes.

Ring Closing Olefin Metathesis (RCM):

Definition: Ring-closing olefin metathesis, often abbreviated as RCM, is a chemical reaction in which an open-chain compound with two terminal carbon-carbon double bonds is converted into a cyclic compound by the formation of a new carbon-carbon double bond within the molecule.

Shrocks Catalyst and Grubbs Catalyst:

Schrock’s catalysts are typically based on transition metal compounds containing molybdenum or tungsten

Grubbs’ catalysts are typically based on ruthenium (Ruthenium) complexes.
